What is VIES?

VIES (VAT Information Exchange System) is the official VAT number validation system operated by the European Commission. It allows businesses to check whether a VAT number is valid for intra-EU trade — specifically to confirm that a supplier or customer is registered for VAT in their country.

VIES does not hold a central database of EU VAT numbers. Instead, it queries each EU member state's national VAT database in real time. This means the result is authoritative — it reflects the exact current registration status as held by the relevant national tax authority.

When should I use VIES?

  • Before issuing a zero-rated (0% VAT) invoice to an EU business — you must verify their VAT number is valid
  • During supplier due diligence — confirm that a new supplier is actually registered for VAT
  • For intra-community supply — VIES validation is a legal requirement to apply the zero rate
  • Period-end reconciliation — verify that all supplier VAT numbers in your records are still valid
